The need for proper oral hygiene is not exclusive to humans. Pets need dental care, too. At Madison Animal Care Hospital, we provide a number of pet dental services to help maintain your dog or cat’s oral hygiene. These services include:
- Digital X-rays (also referred to as radiographs)
- Tooth extractions
- Scaling and polishing
What to Expect at Your Pet’s Dental Visit
As recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), we believe X-rays of the mouth should be a part of every pet’s dental visit. According to a recently published report, “...intraoral radiographs revealed important pathology in 27.8% of dogs and 41.7% of cats when no abnormal findings were noted on the initial examination. In patients with abnormal findings present, additional pathology was revealed with X-rays in 50% of dogs and 53.9% of cats.” This means radiographs can help us detect potential oral health issues in your pet that may otherwise go undetected through traditional dental examination methods.
Before conducting any dental procedures, we carefully examine all pets to make sure they are healthy enough to undergo the required anesthesia.
Once your pet has received anesthesia, we will then begin to perform all pet dental procedures such as X-rays and cleaning. Throughout the procedure, our veterinary team will carefully and continuously monitor your pet’s vital signs.
Advanced Pet Dental Procedures
If your pet requires advanced pet dental care, we offer a dental referral program in which we partner with area dental professionals who are experts in providing procedures such as:
- Root canals
- Oral surgery
- Interceptive orthodontics
Proper Pet Dental Care Begins at Home
Your pet needs regular dental care in order to prevent many of the same potentially serious health issues that humans can face. Some of these pet dental issues include:
- Bad breath
- Periodontal disease
- Cracked, chipped, or worn teeth
- Plaque build–up
As a pet owner, you play the most important part in making sure your pet’s dental health is preserved. In addition to regularly scheduling dental visits, you should also routinely brush your pet’s teeth at home. We strongly recommend you use dental products at home that have been approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC).
VOHC–approved products available at our hospital include:
- Prescription Diet Canine T/D
- Prescription Diet Feline T/D
- Greenies Veterinary Formula Canine Dental Chews
- Tartar Shield Soft Rawhide Chews for Dogs
- Healthy Mouth antiplaque water additive
